Nicotine replacement- how does it work?

Nicotine is the part of the cigarette which makes the body addicted to smoking. If a smoker has been smoking for many years, the brain cells are so addicted to the chemical that it craves it and without nicotine the body might endure some harmful withdrawal effects.

Nicotine replacement solutions have been created to help someone quit smoking sensibly. It attempts to give the body controlled doses of nicotine so that the cravings become more manageable and the person, with a bit of will power, can gradually “wean” themselves off of cigarettes.

Types of nicotine replacements include e cigarettes. An e cigarette is also known as an electronic cigarette. This is basically an inhaler that looks like a normal cigarette which allows the smoker to inhale only nicotine whilst mimicking the physical habit of smoking a regular cigarette.

One smoker said, “I have tried various different things to give up smoking but the e cigarette has been the most successful. It has enabled me to put myself back into control and I can sensibly reduce my doses of nicotine. Being a smoker for twenty years, this is particularly hard for me so being sensible and giving up properly is key. If I didn’t, I would have terrible side effects such as irritability and sleeplessness. My GP advised me to try nicotine replacements because it has worked for many other people who have managed to stay smoke free for many years afterwards.”

Other nicotine replacements include gums and mints. These are taken every few hours by the smoker and they work in the same way as electronic cigarettes, by giving the body a dose of nicotine to help with the cravings. Patches work in the same way, releasing nicotine into the skin every few hours at regular intervals.

Medical research has proven that nicotine replacement therapies are one of the most successful ways to quit smoking. This is because it addresses the real problem behind the addiction, the nicotine, and then targets this directly.

With time and patience, as well as will power, someone can wean themselves off of their cigarette habit permanently.
